Health Insurance

Arranging for health and dental care insurance while at college is critical. Some families can continue to carry their student on a parent employment benefit plan, while others may have to check out purchasing individual plans. Some plans will continue to cover dependents up to 25 years of age as long as they maintain full-time student status, but others will not. Most colleges include access to the Student Health Center services as part of their fees/tuition. Additionally, some require purchasing a supplemental insurance plan unless there is verification of coverage under a parent or individual plan. Regardless of the plan chosen, there are several coverage questions to clarify.

  • Will dependent students be covered?
  • How is student status defined?
  • How many hours are required per quarter or semester?
  • How many quarters or semesters are required per year?
  • Do the quarters or semesters have to be consecutive?
  • Up to what age will student coverage continue?
  • What documentation is required to verify student status?
  • How often does student verification need to be provided?
