Home Owner's Insurance

In the past a student’s valuable possessions were generally limited to a stereo, bike and maybe a small television. With the popularity of computers, this has changed significantly. Many students now bring a computer to school and there can be a significant financial loss if it is stolen. Most students and families can’t afford to replace this expensive item. Sometimes a Home Owners Insurance policy will help. Check with the Insurance carrier who covers the family Home Owners Insurance and explore the following:

  • What are the coverage parameters for a student’s possessions?
  • Do the parents have to demonstrate that they are primarily financially responsible for the student?
  • Do the parents have to be the owners of the items or can it be the student?
  • Where do the items have to be located to be covered?
  • What proof of the items existence or financial value is necessary?
  • What is the procedure for making a claim?
  • What is the deductible?
  • Will making a claim affect future policy rates?
