Homesickness
Homesickness is real. Transitions, although positive and exciting are stressful. Just think about the multiple hurdles that you have already had to be deal with just getting to college. Consider the years of studying, tests, keeping up grades, preparing and sitting often multiple times for the SATs, SAT IIs, or ACT, and then applying to selected colleges. Next was the agony of awaiting the acceptance letters, dealing with elation or disappointment, negotiating choices with parents, considering financial issues, applying for scholarships, financial aid and housing. All a prelude to preparing for departure and a major transition into an unfamiliar environment, uncertain circumstances, new experiences, routines, responsibilities, and expectations along with separation from family and friends.
It normal to feel a little unsettled, even a bit sad, and miss the security of your home, family, friends and familiar high school activities. Meeting people, making new friends, getting involved early on in new activities and keeping busy will ease this transition. The first few days in the dorm are great for making connections since everyone is in the same boat. Here are some tips:
- Keep your dorm room door open and say hi to people passing
- Offer to help someone move in, or hook up a computer or stereo
- Hang out in the halls visiting
- Introduce yourself to others
- Arrange to go to meals with your roommate and neighbors
- Keep an eye out for others that may be a little shy and need to be included
- Discuss class schedules and figure out which classes are in common
- Participate in small study groups
- Consider joining a club, intramural sports program, or work-out class
- Explore university sponsored campus activities, programs and events
- Keep up with academic demands and don’t underestimate the effort (Study and Time Management)
- Make your dorm room homey with some familiar stuff:
- Photographs
- Posters
- Calendars
- Keep in touch with family and friends by phone, e-mail or letters
- Ask your family to write, there is nothing better than real mail!!!
- If you are struggling with homesickness and feel you need to talk about it, call your parents or consider making an appointment in the Student Health Center.
